Signage for Light Fantastic

So I have a habit of volunteering to do things just because I know I will enjoy doing it. This is a perfect example, when I delivered my lights to the Malthouse on Monday I spied a perfect opportunity for some lit-up laser-engraved acrylic signs.

This is a technique I have been messing with since college, when you engrave the surface of acrylic and then shine a light through the face of the acrylic it glows wherever it has been engraved.

I offered to do some signage for all of the designers and as I was stuck in traffic driving back across the city I came up with the design. Using the same LED lights as we use in the mini lights I would cut some legs that support both the light and the acrylic.

I would normally try to hide the bulb and battery pack inside a base or stand but because of the nature of the show (lighting) I though it would work really well to make the light source a feature of the design.

The signs went down a treat and were, as I had hoped, really fun to make.

Light Fantastic

We are really excited and honoured to participated in a lighting exhibition in the Malthouse in Dublin. I have been working really hard to get the new star light ready in time for the launch this Thursday.
Here is a preview of the lights I am going to deliver today.

Wall-mounted paper organiser

Despite what everyone seems to think, I am an exceptionally disorganised person. Piles of paper seem to be magnetically attracted to me and despite investing in any number of folders, filing cabinets and in and out trays I alway end up with piles of random, but important, papers all around me on my desk.

My latest attempt to be organised is this, a series of wall-mounted racks made in acrylic and birch plywood.  The idea being that I have 4 or 5 of them mounte don the wall behind my desk, each one is assigned a certain "genre" of paperwork and then I can just reach behind me and keep the clutter away from my work surface.

This is only the very first one, there are a few changes still to make but so far so good, I might be on to something here.....

Star Light!

I have been working really hard to get this light up and running in time for the Light Fantastic show in the Malthouse which starts next week.

I am delighted to say that finally, in the late hours of Wednesday night I got a fully grown and functioning one together!

These are really labour intensive but I get a real kick out of making them. I'm not sure what colours are best, I'll just keep making them in many different colours until I'm sick of it.

Here are some photos of the finished result (haven't had a chance to set up for some proper shots yet so these will have to suffice for now)

star light prototype

Here is a sneak peak of what I hope is going to be our next product.

I am hoping to be able to use the stars as lights. Due to their shape and the need to be able to change bulbs I'm coming across quite a few challenges. But this prototype looks pretty promising so I think it will be worth the effort.
